What is SPARK:

Created in 2005 by Green Power EMC and Flint Energies, the SPARK Energy Education Program® is a multi-disciplinary program embracing energy production, conversion, and efficient energy use. Today SPARK’s primary focus is solar power. As the largest solar education program in Georgia, SPARK provides participating schools with access to data from solar installations across the state and curriculum to study solar energy. The SPARK curriculum is teacher- and student-friendly and supports STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)in the areas of problem-solving, math, physics, chemistry, biology, life sciences, earth science and more. To help ensure students take full advantage of this solar learning laboratory, Green Power EMC and Georgia’s EMCs are pleased to offer teachers the opportunity to participate in a free, two-day information- packed solar energy workshop. Attendees will learn how SPARK’s unique standards-based core curriculum and hands-on solar technology activities can be used with students throughout the school year.

What to Expect:

DAY ONE: of the workshop includes an overview of the program and curriculum content and details access to data and other program resources online. Hands-on activities will introduce teachers to lessons in each curriculum subject area. The day will conclude with an optional field trip to a utility- scale solar photovoltaic site. (Houston Solar)

DAY TWO: introduces additional tools and resources provided by your local EMC, including a series of presentations on energy, electricity, renewables, and energy careers. Attendees will also learn about our portable solar training laboratory that can be used for hands-on solar and energy utilization experiments. After lunch, attendees will tour the C-130 aircraft exhibit. Following the tour, the workshop will conclude with an optional session on grant writing tips and tricks.
